The School of Education & Human Services is accreditated by the
National Council for Accreditation of Teacher Education (NCATE) which is recognized as the premier accrediting body for schools, colleges, and departments of education.
NCATE is composed of more than 30 professional and policymaker organizations representing millions of Americans committed to quality teaching. Founded in 1954 and committed to the belief that every student deserves a caring, competent and highly qualified teacher, NCATE works to make a difference in the quality of teaching, teachers, school specialists and administrators.
In addition, the following programs have also earned national accreditation:
- Athletic Training is accredited by the Commission on Accreditation of Athletic Training Education
- Sport Management is accredited by The North American Society of Sport Management
These accreditations serve as a testimonial to the excellent quality of a Canisius education, which prepares students to become leaders in their professions and their communities.
Conceptual Framework
Educational programs in the School of Education and Human Services are founded on three interrelating and perpetually evolving characteristics. These characteristics are Knowledge, Service, and Leadership/Professionalism.
Knowledge
Focused on providing you with the content, pedagogical and professional knowledge, skills, and dispositions necessary for quality performance in your field of study, programs prepare you to reflect on your practice, apply knowledge, exhibit skills, and develop dispositions essential to successful teaching, administration, and counseling.
Service
Canisius College is committed to the education of the whole person and to the belief that all students can learn. Within the context of your work you will promote authentic learning, social and emotional development, and a commitment to social justice in environments that foster respect for diversity and the dignity of all. You will be encouraged to participate in the urban community in which the college is located and, through a variety of field experiences and service-learning opportunities, to reach out to an ethnically, racially, culturally, religiously, and intellectually diverse population.
Leadership/Professionalism
Supportive experiences in collaborative projects allow you to learn with and from others, form a professional network of colleagues, and assume positions of responsibility and leadership within a group. You will be encouraged to embark on a life long commitment to your profession, to develop the ability to reflect thoughtfully on your experiences in order to guide your professional development and improve your practice. You will be encouraged to join professional organizations and actively participate in professional conferences and research.
