Canisius has long been a destination for Canadian students seeking a high-quality education in the United States.  The Office of International Student Programs provides a wide variety of services to more than 300 Canadian students at Canisius.

We will help you with immigration requirements, car pool arrangements and filing income taxes.   If you live across the border in Southern Ontario, CanPass will help make your commute across the Peace Bridge much smoother.

Services & Programs
  • I-20 form
    The I-20 form is an official government document which certifies that a person is eligible to be a non-immigrant student.
  • Commuter Services
    • Car Pool Coordination
    • NEXUS
      NEXUS is a program for travelers who frequently cross the Canada-United States border. NEXUS members enjoy a simplified entry process and may find the pass makes the trip shorter by allowing you to use a dedicated commuter lane.

    • CanPass is also an option for students who live across the border in Southern Ontario and want to make their commute across the Peace Bridge smoother.
  • International Student Health
    Canadian students are not required to purchase a special health insurance policy for international students. However if you decide to reside in Buffalo, you may want to purchase this policy. To learn more about purchasing an insurance plan and the services available to foreign students click the link above.
  • On-Campus Employment
  • Occupational Practical Training (OPT) Workshops -- regarding the one year allotted for post-graduate employment in the USA.
  • Tax Information Seminars -- offered once a year in February or March.
  • Canadian Students' bulletin board-
    located in the basement hallway of Old Main, the Canadian students' bulletin board provides information on services and upcoming events.
  • Campus Housing

Working in the United States
  1. According to U.S. Immigration regulations, international students are only allowed to work on campus (a maximum of 20 hours a week when school is in session or 40 hours a week during vacation breaks).
  2. Any other work must be related to your field of study.  Students seeking off-campus employment, must have been a full time student in the U.S. for at least two semesters, not including summer months, and you must consult with the Office of International Student Programs.  If you no not follow this procedure, you may be subject to deportation.
