Mission of the Department of PhilosophyTo fulfill its Ignatian responsibility, the Department of Philosophy provides programs of instruction intended to cultivate an abiding sense of responsibility as men and women for others by focusing on the service of faith and the promotion of justice. The philosophy faculty considers it of crucial importance that a good education addressing such concerns has a firm foundation in the history of philosophy and the principal branches of philosophy, in the issues of moral philosophy, together with special attention to examining argumentation.
Our programs of philosophy provide sustained examinations of important concerns facing human beings in a globalizing world with profound difficulties for realizing the best in humanity. In this connection, the Department accepts its mission to offer programs that serve:
- Students interested to undertake serious study of philosophy as majors and minors
- Students from other disciplines who want to complement their programs of study with a sharpened philosophical acumen
- Students in the College community interested to better understand challenging moral and social concerns toward becoming better citizens of the modern world
- Students taking core curriculum courses with special concerns for ethics, justice, diversity, and global awareness
- Members of our College community interested to become better informed about challenging moral and social concerns as expressed in philosophical terms
- Persons in the broader WNY community who wish to continue their educations and enrich their lives as men and women for others
