The Holiday season is now upon us and soon you will be leaving for the break. Listed below are some guidelines for your departure.

CLOSING & OPENING


CLOSING
All college-owned housing will close on Saturday, December 13, 2008 at 9:00am. Students must vacate housing no later than this time, as swipe card access will be turned off. As stated in the Student Handbook, the only students that will be approved to stay on campus during the break period are in-season approved athletes and international students.

REQUESTS TO STAY
If you are an in-season approved athlete or international student that will be staying on campus over break, please click the Request to Stay Form link below and fill out the request to stay form. You will be notified via your Griffmail account on the status of your request. Absolutely no student will be allowed to stay on campus between December 24 and January 5, when the college is closed. All requests to stay must be submitted no later than Wednesday, December 10 at 3:00pm.

PLEASE NOTE: Students that are approved to stay will be consolidated into specific rooms or apartments in specific buildings that will remain open over break. This means that there is a possibility those approved to stay will not be living in their regular living assignment. "Approved to Stay" notes will be issued before break and must be taped to the front door of the room or apartment.

HOLIDAY SHUTTLE SERVICE
A shuttle service to the Buffalo-Niagara International Airport, Dick Road train station, and downtown bus station will be available from Wednesday, December 10 until Friday, December 12. You must sign up for a time slot in the Residence Life office. The shuttle will run from 9:00am-8:00pm, with the last shuttle departing from campus at 7pm, each day. The shuttle will pick you up in the Frisch Circle. Space is limited so sign up early!

OPENING
All college-owned housing will re-open at noon on Sunday, January 11 to all returning residents. Those moving into campus housing for the first time for the spring semester may check in on Friday, January 9 between 8:30am and 5:00pm in the Office of Residence Life, located in the lower-level of Dugan Hall.

SECURITY

As part of an effort with Project Conservation to increase energy sustainability on campus, there will be fewer staff members and people on the campus. Please be more vigilant in observing safety measures such as locking doors and not walking alone. Take responsibility for keeping yourself safe seriously. Call Public Safety at x2330, if you observe anything out of the ordinary.

It is very important that all security alarms are activated during this break. If your apartment has an alarm and you are unsure of how it works please contact Assistant Director Kathleen Farley in Residence Life at x8300.

PROCEDURES FOR CLOSING YOUR ROOM/APARTMENT

All rooms will be inspected over break for cleanliness, damage, and safety-compliance. Please follow the guidelines below.

  • Discard all food and trash
  • Shut and lock all doors and windows
  • Unplug all small appliances, including computers and small refrigerators
  • Clean out small refrigerators and place a towel underneath it so it can defrost
  • Where applicable, turn on apartment security alarms
  • Bring all valuable items home
STUDENTS LEAVING HOUSING


WITHDRAWING
Every student in College housing is obligated to pay for housing for the full academic year. Additionally, all freshman students are required to live on campus unless they commute from the home they share with a parent or guardian. Any student withdrawing from housing, including those transferring and studying abroad, should contact Assistant Director Kathleen Farley immediately at x8300 or farleyk@canisius.edu.

Students leaving housing must complete a check-out Room Condition Report.

GRADUATING
Students who are graduating must complete a withdrawal form in the Office of Residence Life before they depart. Additionally, room keys must be returned and an online inventory of the room must be completed. Any student that does not return their room key will be charged $45-$90 for a lock change.

ROOM CHANGES

Forms for room changes can be picked up in the Residence Life office and should be completed immediately. Only students whose room changes have been approved by Residence Life will be allowed to move. Students who move without approval are subject to disciplinary action. If you would like to make a room change, please contact the Residence Life office at x8300 to make an appointment with Assistant Director Kathleen Farley. All room changes must be competed before winter break

GENERAL INFORMATION

PARKING
All students leaving their automobiles on campus for break must park them on the first level of the parking ramp. Parking all cars in the same location allows for better security and snow removal from campus.

MEALS
Dining services will end with dinner on Friday, December 12 and resume operation with dinner on Sunday, January 11.

ACCESS
The swipe card access system will be shut down for all residents over break, except for those that are approved to stay.

FINES
Students must be registered to stay to be on campus over break. Unregistered students found over break are subject to a $100 fine and a $20 per day charge.

EQUIPMENT UPGRADES
Please be aware that over the break period all off-campus residence halls will have new thermostats installed in each apartment.  This means that all apartments will be entered by Facillities Management over break to make the installations.
