Student Resources

Welcome to the World of Service-Learning!

Service is at the heart of Jesuit education because it calls us to be “men and women for others.”  We are called to commit ourselves to making a difference in society and to working for change.  Service to others gives us an opportunity to reflect on the broader issues and the social injustices that affect our society.  So, we have found a wonderful pedagogical method by which to do this.  It is service-learning.

How to Get Involved!
  1. Go to the service-learning home page.  Read it carefully.
  2. Click on the Student Resources Box, then click on Student Forms.
  3. Click on the link Service-Learning Pre-Experience Survey, fill it out and submit it.  If you are in more than one service-learning class, do this survey only once.
  4. Click on the link Service Sites on the top left of the page.  The page with categories will come up. Check through them to find one that fits with your class.  You will find opportunities to choose from within the category.  You can also search alphabetically by clicking on the Complete Listing link at the top of the same page.
  5. Once you have selected a site, call the contact person listed to set up your service experience.  You want to make sure that the service relates to your course: its goals, objectives, or even content matter.  There must be a connection between the   academic course and the service.
  6. Follow this process (or a similar one) when you call the contact person:
“Hello, my name is _____ and I am a student at Canisius College in a service-learning class.  I am interested in giving ___ hours of service to your site this semester.  My goal is to be able to connect my service to my course and render meaningful service to you. Thank you.  I look forward to collaborating with you.
  7. After you call, click on the link , fill it out and submit it.  Put in the name of your service site. Put in the correct and complete course number.   DO NOT ADD ANYTHING ELSE.
  8. Make a copy of the Time Sheet (under Student Forms) and take it with you to your service site each time you go.  Have it signed.  Give the Time Sheet to your professor at the end of your experience.
  9. The Placement Site Assessment will be filled out at the end of your experience by the coordinator who was with you.  Give this form to your professor.  Once your professor has seen it, you may keep it.
  10. The Student Evaluation Form you will do online for each course.
  11. Click on the link Post Service Survey, fill it out and submit it.
